Handmade Wardrobe – Joni Top

I was lucky enough to get to test this fab pattern for my IG buddy Leanne Fanny. The Joni has a dress and top version, I tested the top version in a size 14 (to fit my big bangers in). I did have to take the side seams in a little extra but it fit me perfectly across the bust.

This is the first pattern Leanne has released, you can find it here, in her Etsy shop. I really like the shape of the neckline on the Joni and love that the back is the same shape.

The pattern is great for beginners as there are plenty of photos and comprehensive instructions to follow. The dress version has an elasticated waist which looks cute, but I haven’t had a chance to make it yet.

I had fun picking fabric for this top. I had originally planned on using the leftover blue floral print from my Myrtle dress but I didn’t have quite enough. Instead, off I trotted to Fabricland where the classic cars caught my eye. Lucky for me they had a plain lilac polycotton in the same shade as the cars in the print and exactly the same weight. A match made in heaven don’t you think?

Before I go I just want to say sorry for the scary stare in these photos, I don’t know what happened? Think I lost the ability to smile. Seriously what was I doing??

A Difficult Decision

Over the past few months my life has become increasingly hectic and with everything going on juggling family and my JAK & GEEGEE shop has become very difficult. After a lot of consideration I have decided to close my Etsy shop, leaving me more time to spend on my blog which I love writing, time with the monsters and Sean and (more importantly) I’ll have more time to sew just for fun. I’ve got a long list of projects that I’m desperate to have a go at but sewing for the shop has meant my poor list has simply been forgotten. A new year and a new sewing room have made me realise now is the time to start really enjoying sewing again.

So my big plans for 2014 are

– Close my Etsy shop
As of 31/1/14 my JAK & GEEGEE Etsy shop will be closed, my sale will be on until then so make sure if there are any items you want head to my shop before the 31/1/14.

– Teach Monster no1 to sew.
We started a pin wheel cushion in 2013 so we’ll be finishing that.

– Work through my crafty to do list.
I’m not going to share my list now, partly because it’s forever growing, but also I’ll be sharing each project with you as I go so don’t want to ruin the surprise.

– Make my own clothes.
Last August I had a bit of a reality check and realised that I needed to lose some weight and get fit again. I started following a Paleo lifestyle and trying to exercise more, which is probably one of the best things I’ve done in a long time. I’ve managed to lose 2 1/2 stone and dropped 2 dress sizes, I’ve got so much more energy and feel better in myself. Anyway, now that I’m not a blimp and actually a size I want to stay at, I figure it’s time to start making myself some clothes. The added bonus being I’ll need less fabric now that I’m smaller ;). To be honest I’m a little scared of this plan as I don’t really have a clue about making clothes that actually fit properly but we all have to start somewhere and thankfully my lovely sewing club buddy Rachel Pinheiro as volunteered to help me, Phew!

– Exercise more.
Self explanatory really. The weight I’ve lost has been 90% diet so it’s time to get toning, if you’re a mum reading this you can imagine the amount of work I’ve got to do on my jelly belly lol. I’m just hoping I can crochet while on a bike at the gym, multitasking at its best right?

– Blog at least once a week.
I do love my little blog, even if my mums the only reader (thanks mum xxx), but I have neglected you in 2013 only writing sporadically. Well this year I will write once a week, even if it’s just to say I’ve been lazy and not got anything crafty done. Honesty is the best policy after all.

I think I’ve got plenty to keep me busy, I feel better just writing it all down and am really looking forward to the year ahead. Have you got any big crafty plans for 2014? I’d love to hear about them!

Sean, the monsters and I have a relaxed night with neighbours planned, then New Year’s Day I plan to stay in my pjs all day, playing games, eating, sewing and maybe a bit of online sales shopping too.

Now I know I didn’t get you anything for Christmas (sorry about that!) so I thought instead I’d give you a little gift for the new year. How about 13% off everything in my Etsy Shop, that includes custom orders. All you need to do is visit my shop as normal and at the checkout use the code NEWYEAR13. The code will be valid until January 13th 2013.

Happy New Year!!

Another Month Gone

I can’t believe how quickly this month has gone! We’ve had a lot of change around here with Monster no1 finally starting school, but we seem settled in to the new routine. I’m really pleased he has settled in so quickly, although I’m not surprised, he is so confident and out going he easily makes friends (I don’t know where he gets it from??).

Looking back its actually been pretty relaxed around here, we managed to spend a lot of time together as a family before my sister left for Spain, which has been really nice. We also had my mum and Sean’s birthdays which meant lots of cake and eating out, which can’t be bad can it!

Here’s my Photo a Day round up, I’m really pleased I managed to get a photo every day. Did you give it a go this month? How did you do?

Chantelle has put Octobers list up over on her blog (you can find it here) and I’ve put the list below too. I would love to know if you are joining in too so if you let me know in the comments below where you post your photos I will follow you.

On the sewing front I’ve had a few custom orders this month which is great as I need the distraction while I wait for my AMH bag pattern to arrive. Don’t forget I am happy to take custom orders so if you are after something special please email me or convo me on Etsy.

I had strict instructions from Monster no1 last night to make him a new pencil case as his old cheapy one broke yesterday. Here’s what I came up with

I’m a sucker for a bit of Summersville! I lined it with a bright red solid scrap I had and a matching red zip, job done.

Just before I go, I’ve listed some new items over in my Etsy shop, including a few Christmas Stockings and Advent Calendars, ready for you to peruse.

*GEEK ALERT* My new labels

You may have noticed that a few weeks ago my website header had a little makeover. Lets be honest my original logo was a bit, well, naff. It was there to do a job until I could come up with something that represented me and JAK & GEEGEE, nothing too busy, just something simple but with a little twist.

So after a lot of thinking and shopping around I commissioned WinchesterLambourne over at Etsy to design my new logo. I was really impressed by the quality and speed of service. The logo was exactly what I had in mind and I was so pleased with it I also had my new business cards designed too! I would definitely recommend WinchesterLambourne if you need any Graphic design work done.

I really wanted to have some cute little folded labels to add to my JAK & GEEGEE products, everyone loves that little something extra when buying handmade (plus I could do with the free advertising). I also recently met with Trading Standards and they thought the label would be great for displaying care instructions.

I ordered these little cotton beauties from Sasha at TagsandLabels, you can find the etsy shop here (I think I have an unhealthy obsession with Etsy).

I think the labels look great, don’t you? They are really easy to stitch into seams as they aren’t too thick, the only little issue is they don’t like being pinned in place so I have to place them carefully when stitching.

The XL Make-up bag is a going away gift I made for my little sister who is moving to Spain for a while, hope you have an amazing time Little Frankie and we will all miss you! If you like the make-up bag you can contact me on here through the comments or the contact form to order one or over on my Etsy shop through the contact me or request custom item buttons (shameless plug over now).

I haven’t forgotten you…….Honest!

I know, I know I’ve been slacking in the blog department lately, it’s been busy around here but I know that’s no excuse so I’m sorry.

Since I last posted the monsters seem to have really grown up, Monster no2 has decided he wants to potty train, so all he seems to say is “wee wee, wee wee mummy!” he quickly worked out that to avoid bedtime or the naughty corner all he has to do is shout the W word and whip off his trousers! Having said that he is doing really well, even waking up in the night a few times to go on the toilet. Monster no1 is rapidly growing up, it’s his first day at school tomorrow, only mornings to start, he is so excited and I am too…’s just….he seems so grown up but he’s still my baby. It’s going to feel strange without him at home once he goes full days.

This week we’ve celebrated my mum and Sean’s birthdays. My poor mum had to have some nasty injections at the hospital on her birthday, we had a quiet afternoon together so she could open her pressies. She has an unhealthy obsession with Marmite so I made her a Marmite Hamper

And this Snoopy make-up bag.

Oh no wait, yup that’s right, I somehow managed to delete the photo of said make-up bag but I’m sure you can imagine what it looks like (I’m a complete muppet and will include a new photo on my next post).

Months ago I was doing a bit of fabric shopping on Etsy (as you do) and came across this fabric from here, my mum has loved Snoopy since she was a kid and you don’t see much of it in the UK anymore so I ordered it and put it away ready for her birthday. I love the comic strip look, the fabric was lovely to sew and the service was great. I hope she likes it as much as I do.

This year I got the hubster proper boy presents (with help from the monsters). I got him a red stripy sweatshirt from John Lewis (I do plan on stealing this after a month or two), monster no1 chose him some Star Wars Lego which they sat and made at breakfast and monster no2 got Daddy some Xbox games (which he is busy playing now). We spent today at Farming World which is great for the kids, lots of farm animals, birds of prey, outdoor and indoor play areas. We all enjoyed it (especially the Pillows), although my back is suffering now!

As well as all this I have had a few orders to complete and have designed a new fold over clutch which I’ve listed in my Etsy shop. This will be available in more prints soon but feel free to contact me if you would like one in a particular colour way or print.

A good week all round

You best get comfy, I have a lot to talk (well write) about today. I’ve had a lot going on the past week, don’t you love it when that happens, lots of little things to get excited about and sometimes big things too. I’m hoping the rest of the summer holidays will be as busy, I need to keep the monsters occupied.

Anyway back to my week. I had an order for some bandana bibs, so off to one of my favourite fabric shops I went, Hometown in Rochester, Kent. I love it in Hometown, the staff are always friendly and really helpful, they don’t mind the monsters “helping” me shop either so I get more time to rummage through the bolts! I haven’t been in for a while so all the new fabrics were a nice surprise, I struggled to resist the urge to spend a fortune, I’m sure you can understand that πŸ˜‰

My customer also wanted some Skull print which I found at Fabric Inspirations, I went for a great Kokka print.

I have had a few customers buy multiple bibs in an order, so I decided to trial a special offer of 5 bibs for the price of 4. I’ve been pleased with the response so will be adding it to my Etsy shop soon.

I finally received my exhibit numbers for the HOKH Maidstone Quilt Show, my quilts are numbers 29 Country Garden and 30 Go Fetch! If you are going give them a wave. It all seems real now, I guess I should pull my finger out and get them finished.

The monsters and I have been busy buying the last few bits for our camping trip which is coming up soon, they were so excited to get their sleeping bags, not sure how well they will sleep in them once we get away though. It’s the first time we have been so it should be interesting, 4 adults, 4 monsters and 3 dogs, it’s not going to be a quiet week.

By Friday with all the excitement I was knackered and knew we had a busy weekend ahead. I was just settling down to have a cheeky cider, watch the opening ceremony and finish making my lovely friend Sam’s birthday present (for the next day, I love a bit of pressure me) when the phone rang. I nearly didn’t answer but I’m so glad I did. It was a lovely lady called Louise ringing to tell me that an allotment was available if I wanted it. Of course I said yes! We are all so excited, living in a flat we don’t have much room to grow so the allotment will be great. We are sharing it with our neighbours, Lyn and I are off down there tomorrow to have a good look at our plot and start planning. Be warned I will be boring you to death with a new topic very soon, the highs and lows of fruit and veg Ha!

Saturday was a busy day, I had double booked us so it was a mad dash for Monster no1’s swimming lesson, a quick change then off to Sams for her youngests birthday, then on to my Great Aunts house for a lovely afternoon in the garden. The monsters had a great time riding round in Great Uncle Tims mini tractor and we all ate too much BBQ.

As you can see my Mum and cousin enjoyed the tractor as much as the monsters, if not more.

Next stop was to drop the dogs home then back to Sams for a few cheeky glasses of vino, a fashion show from Sam and a mammoth Nerf Gun battle (the adults not the monsters oops!). I had made Sam a skirt from some lovely Liberty print Jersey and a make up bag from a texty print I had in my stash.

We all had a great time and as you can imagine we all slept well Saturday night. The monsters were shattered Sunday and were still recovering today.

Last little thing before I go, I just wanted to say thank you to the very talented Karen over at Blueberry Park. She very kindly sent me a bag of pretty scraps she didn’t need, so I will be using those for key fobs and cards. Make sure you check out her blog it’s a great read and look through her shop, Karen prints her own fabrics which are to die for.

End of an era and new beginnings

What an emotional few days, I’m sure a lot of you have been through the same this week or over the years. Monster no1 finished nursery and is off to big school in September! How did my scrawny, twiglet legged baby grow into a cheeky, confident boy so fast?!

Monster no1 is so excited to start big school, but at the same time he is upset he’s going to a different school to his nursery friends and has already been telling me he misses them (he only finished nursery wednesday). I think it’s going to be a great learning curve for him, making new friends, gaining more independence, all the new experiences. I’m so excited for him, I know its selfish but in a way I’m sad too, I’m one step closer to him not needing me, before I know it he will be a grunting teenager who is certain I’m only here to embarrass him. All the time he wants a cuddle before bed I’m going to make the most of it.

As monster no1 was leaving I thought I would make the nursery teachers a thank you present each. I decided to make them key fobs, they have a few keys for gates and doors at nursery that they need handy all the time so I figured this would be a good idea. I have loads of lovely scraps from the Country Garden quilt I’m making for my first exhibition that would be perfect for his teachers.

I think when I started making them my brain had a bit of a melt down, for some reason I thought I would need a layer of wadding as well as interfacing to make it stiff enough. BIG MISTAKE. After a bit of swearing at myself (and unpicking) I quickly got them done.

I’m really pleased with them and glad I used a ribbon loop to attach the rings, I don’t know why but I am. I just hope they all like them.

Now these are done I can get back to my list of projects, the first few bits I need to get done are a phone case for my nan, a business card holder for the hubby and my quilts for the exhibition. Once those are out of the way I’m thinking about making myself a cute clutch bag out of one of these overprinted beauties from Lu Summers.

Oh and I will be making a few key fobs for my Etsy shop too!

I think that little lot will keep me occupied for while, what projects have you got planned for the rest of summer?

What a disaster!

Sorry I have been quiet the past few weeks, I have been crazy busy with the on going colds we have all had (monster no2 and I are still coughing Grrrr!) and the Stock for my stall at the Aylesford festival which was on Saturday.

I managed to get everything I wanted to made and all packed up ready for the stall by Friday night, mainly thanks to my mum and dad taking the boys out a couple times so I could work in peace and my darling hubby for making the dinner most nights! I got to my pitch bright and early Saturday morning to get set up (did I mention it was outdoors?), Gazebo up, table up, then the rain started πŸ™ and continued on and off all morning, not a good start. Mum and Dad arrived to help finish setting up and they were shortly followed by hubby, the monsters and the mutts. The monsters loved the live music and monster no1 really enjoyed running around with his friends from nursery.

Unfortunately due to the rain the turnout was much less than expected and by lunchtime the rain became torrential. Gazebos were being blown over, my stock was getting wet and shoppers vanished. At the same time as the rain started monster no1 wandered off. It was so frightening, he had been playing football with some friends and decided to walk off to the other side of the festival and play on the swings. Luckily our friends had helped organise the event and between them, hubby, my sister, my parents and I he was quickly found. He is always so good at playing where we can see him but I think that the excitement of the day took over a bit, I have never been so worried and felt so hopeless before and hope I never feel like that again. That was the final straw for me, we packed up and left, soaking wet, stressed and no sales, not my best day that’s for sure.

Here’s my stall, I will list all the items in my Etsy shop, so feel free to check it out.

Just a quick hello

Well Hello! How have you all been? Made anything good so far this week? I have mostly been on Pluto watch since his operation Monday, so far he is doing really well. We have the vets tomorrow morning and it’s the big reveal, the bandage is coming off. Here’s a photo of him after we picked him up from the vets. (warning this involves a bald dog bum!)

Doesn’t he look pathetic! Bless him!

Although I’ve been busy as Nurse Polly I have managed to post my first tutorial, it’s a zip pouch which is a useful way to use your scraps. Let me know what you think, do my ramblings make sense? Too many photos or not enough?

Also I have added a new listing to my Etsy shop, here. Its a made to order listing where you can email me a drawing and I will embroider the image onto fabric. It’s a great gift idea. I decided to add the listing as I did this with a monster no1 original and got great feedback when I posted it on Instagram and Twitter.

Right hubby is getting the hump with me so I best put my iPad down and talk to him for a while.

Happy Sewing!

Busy. Busy. Busy.

I’ve had a good week this week make wise. Firstly (and the thing I’m most excited about) I posted my Handmade Gift Exchange gift to Claire over at Claireabellemakes. I posted it Friday lunch time and she was busy tweeting about it Sunday. After looking at Claires blog and following her on twitter I decided to embroider a line drawing of a camera for her to hang at home. I was so pleased she liked it as much as I enjoyed making it. Now I just can’t wait to receive my gift!

I also had two birthday presents to make this week, one for my aunt and one for a family friend. Neither of them had asked for anything in particular and I try to make as many of my gifts as possible so I opted for making them zip pouches. I think these are great as you can use them to hold anything, from your iPod when you go to the gym (other personal music devices are available πŸ˜‰ ) to a little embroidery project to chuck (or place carefully, it’s up to you) in your bag for when you are bored on the train. The other advantage to these is they are pretty easy and quick to make.

As they are straight forward I thought it would be good as my first tutorial. I will add it to the site soon so keep an eye out over the next day or two.

As well as all my projects on the go this week we have been busy as a family this weekend. Saturday we all went to Monster no1s girlfriends house to celebrate her 4th birthday. Yup you did read that correctly I said girlfriend! I met her mum at anti-natal classes and we have been close friends ever since, and so have the kids, they are like a little old married couple and they are so funny to watch.

Sunday was Fathers day so we had a family picnic planned, this included our parents and my sister. The monsters were really excited and the dogs couldn’t wait to get to the park. Unfortunately Pluto was a little too keen and leapt out of the car boot when we arrived at the park. My car is big and for a little dog it’s a long way down. Pluto found this out the hard way, he managed to dislocate his knee πŸ™ We took him to the vets and the decision was made to operate tomorrow. Fingers crossed it all goes well and he will be his normal self again soon.

On a brighter note, I have finally got my bum in gear and set up my Etsy shop. I have put a few bits up and I promise to add more on a regular basis so make sure you go have a look!

I think it’s about time for some sleep for me, so hope you all have a good week.
